Seven Sac High Athletes Advance to the 2010 Masters Trials!
Posted on: Saturday, May 22, 2010by Herb Jones
Twenty-seven track and field teams from all over Northern California, ranging from Sacramento to Fairfield, converged upon Bella Vista High School in Fair Oaks, California on both Wednesday, May 19th and Friday, May 21st for the Sac Joaquin Section D2 Trials and Finals. With ONLY seven athletes (six girls and one boy) entered in nine events, Sac High fiercely competed for the coveted top-four medal places against some of Northern California's strongest track and field athletes.
On the girls' side, an unprecedented occurrence took place when all six (6) athletes advanced to the Masters Meet Trials, to be held next Thurdsday, May 27th at the historic Hughes Stadium (located on the Sacramento City College campus).
Ashlee Owens led the charge for the girls by performing with the heart of a champion when she successfully completed a sudden death jump off against Dominique Fae from Galt High School. As most of the stadium crowd focused its immediate attention on the high jump pit area, they listened to the meet director pain stakingly describe the jump off over the Public Announcer (PA) system where Ashlee took a leap over the high jump bar at the 4'11" mark, cleared it and sealed an eighth place spot that moved her forward to the Masters Meet competition next week.
Next up was the Girls 4x100m Relay team comprised of Fantasia Hilliard, Tori Mason, Ashjanee' Woods and Brittany Shine. These four young women ran a season best (SB) record time of 49.82 seconds while earning a sixth place spot and moving forward to the Masters Meet competition next week.
Next, was Tori Mason. While running into a very strong head wind of 2.3 meters per second, the Sac High team captain posted a very respectable time of 16.18 seconds earning a fourth place medal in the 100m Hurdles event. With only a short amount of rest time, Tori competed next in the 300m Hurdles race event where she posted a decent running time of 46.86 seconds. She earned a sixth place certificate of participation award and moved forward to compete in both the 100m and 300m Hurdles race events next week at the Masters Meet.
Next, was the Girls 4x400m Relay team comprised of Monea Stribling, Tori Mason, Fantasia Hilliard, and Brittany Shine. Monea led the group out of the blocks with an awesome performance! While nursing a sore foot, she competed very well with a slight limp around the track for the first 100m of the race and eventually posted an opening leg time of 1 minute and 6 seconds before handing the relay baton off to Tori. From here, Tori ran a very good second leg time of 59 seconds, catching the El Camino High School competitor running in front of her, and handing off the baton to Fantasia. From here, Fantasia ran very well posting a good third leg time of 1 minute and 2 seconds and opening up a 40 meter lead on the next closest competitor before passing the baton to Brittany. With all the power that she could muster, Brittany ran very well, maintaining the 40 meter lead over her next closest competitor while posting a final (4th) leg time of 1 minute and 1 second helping her team earn an eight place spot. This allowed the group to move forward to compete at the Masters Meet next week.
Finally, reported earlier this week in another article, our only boy competitor, Will Davis, finished fifth place in the high jump with a leap of six feet and two inches over the bar and already earned his spot to compete in the Masters Meet next week.
Please look for great times and fantastic leaps from these seven worthy Sac High student-athletes as they all have a legitimate chance of getting on the top-three medal stand at the Masters. If this happens, then they will move forward to compete at the CIF State Track & Field Meet to be held on Friday, June 4th and Saturday, June 5th at Buchanan High School in Clovis, California.

Young Athletes gather at Castlemont Saturday!
Saturday, May 2nd, 2009 Castlemont HS (Oakland)
Meet Preview
by Chuck Schneekloth
Thirty-one teams from all over Northern California, ranging from Sacramento to Modesto to San Rafael, will converge upon Castlemont’s Roy Richert Field this Saturday for the inaugural Bay Area Frosh-Soph Championships. With over six hundred athletes entered, competition will be fierce in all fifteen events to win coveted top-six medals and championship t-shirts, while some of the Bay’s strongest track and field programs will battle for bragging rights for the team championship trophies.
On the girls’ side, Castro Valley, Sacramento, and Berkeley appear to be pre-meet favorites for the team title. First-year head coach Matt Rainwater brings a big group with impressive depth, including the top seeds in the high jump (Celeste Martore/5-2), triple jump (Brianna Miller/33-6), 4x1 and 4x4 relays. Sac High has a dominating sprint squad, perhaps one of the best in Nor-Cal, including Monea Stribling’s 2:15 800 and the top four seeds in the 400, all sub-60, including 58.0 Fantasia Hilliard.
Imagine this 4x400 in two years!
Berkeley will bang with Sac all day, as sprint guru Darrell Hampton’s Lady Hornets have the
top two spots in both hurdle races, along with the fastest 200m seed (Brittany Boyd/25.84). Depending on how the sprint cards
may fall, both San Ramon Valley and Miramonte could give close chase in the team title hunt, as both will tap points in both the
distance races and field events.
Chris Puppione’s Miramonte HS has a talented squad that appears, on paper, to be team title favorites. Along with top seeds
in both relays, distance ace Jamie Fernstrom has a top-three time in all three distance races, and with a great day, could win
them all. Three other teams, Jefferson, Berkeley, and San Ramon Valley, should rack up big points and challenge MHS for the
inaugural team trophy. While Jefferson could go 1-2 in both the HJ (Christian Gordan, Ezekiel Nunu/5-10) and HH, Berkeley
will get surges in the 200 (Isaiah Burks/22.43) and 300 IH (Tim Erb/39.76). SRVHS will deploy some distance and throwing
stars to make a run at the team crown, including 4:34 frosh miler sensation Parker Deuel.
Aside from team title battles, the meet promises to have some big performances from some dynamite underclassmen. SF’s
Woodside Prior brings a very talented Amaud Kpachavi (51.1/2:02) who could be a double winner, while Mt. Diablo’s Daniel
Barney (15.9/21-0/41-9) may win three gold. At 137’ and 48’, Terra Linda’s Mauricio Cornejo looks to convincingly sweep the t
hrows. Galileo’s Theresa Cassie-Davis (15-11) may crack the 16’ barrier while winning the long jump.
Perhaps the most exciting race on the track will be the 1600 meters. Oakland Tech’s Julia Eylar (5:30.12) leads a pack of eight
girls all under 5:40, with the top six separated by just five seconds. On the boys’ side, Big Valley Christian’s Nathan Jackson
arrives from Modesto with the best seed (4:32), with Deuel (SRV/4:34.4) and Fernstrom (4:34.8) right at his heels. Nineteen
are seeded under 5:00—all with legitimate chances of getting on the top-six medal stand.
