Paul Doherty Succeeds Cosbie as Head Football CoachDate Posted: Thursday Apr 29, 2010 Doherty succeeds Cosbie as Sac High football coach
Paul Doherty has replaced Doug Cosbie as the football coach at Sacramento High School. Cosbie, who coached the Dragons for four seasons, stepped down to coach a semi-professional team in Italy. "Doug was an awesome guy," said Sac High athletic director Justin Gatling. "He really got our football program back on track. He was here for four years. That's a long time for us." Cosbie, in his second season, led Sac High to a 7-4 finish and the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II playoffs. It was the first winning season and playoff appearance for the Dragons since 1992. The Dragons, 19-23 overall under Cosbie, went 6-5 and reached the postseason for a second time last season despite inexperience. Doherty, who played football and basketball at Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep in San Francisco, was Cosbie's offensive coordinator and played football for Cosbie when the former NFL All-Pro tight end coached at Menlo College in Atherton. Doherty also started a club weightlifting program at the school four years ago, which has paralleled the improvement of the football program. Sac High lifters have won 11 national championships, and several have competed for the United States in international meets. NEW HEAD FOOTBALL COACH AT SAC HIGH
Sacramento, CA – Sacramento Charter High School has hired Paul Doherty as the new Head Varsity Football Coach.
"I am both honored and humbled to accept the role and responsibilities of the Head Football Coaching Position at Sacramento High School. We have very high expectations for the upcoming season and a solid group of returning players,” said Coach Paul Doherty.
“We have chosen Paul to be our next Head Football Coach because of his dedication to the kids and the program, his endless energy, and his knowledge of the game. We are looking forward to this next football season where Paul will take them to the next level,” said Justin Gatling Sac High’s Athletic Director.
Doherty moved to Sacramento in March 2006 to revive Sac High’s defunct football program and install a world class weightlifting program. In four years Dragon Weightlifters have won eleven National Championships both boys and girls at the 13, 15, 17 and 20-under age groups. Weightlifters from Sac High have represented Team USA at over a dozen international competitions ranging from the Pan Am Championships to the Youth and Junior World Championships. This program has allowed Sac High Weightlifters to travel to Thailand, Romania, Peru, Canada, Mexico and Chile, all while representing their country. Most notably, Sac High first team All-Metro football grads Keylin Mackey and Donavan Ford earned acceptance into the highly select US OTC (United States Olympic Training Center) Resident Athlete Program in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Most recently, Doherty was the Offensive Coordinator for the 2009 Varsity Football team that earned the school’s second playoff bid in the last three years. In all, nine Dragons were selected to the All Metro Team.
Coach Doherty is the youngest of four brothers who graduated from Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep in San Francisco and was a member of the highly competitive WCAL (West Catholic Athletic League). While there, Doherty was a two year member of the Varsity Football and Basketball teams. As a member of the distinguished St. Vincent De Paul scholar program, Doherty graduated at the top of his class. He went on to Menlo College where he played football for former Sac High coach and Dallas Cowboys All Pro Doug Cosbie and earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Business Management. While at Menlo, Doherty also played basketball when the Menlo Oaks won the Cal Pac Conference and earned a tournament bid to the NAIA Div II National Tournament. After graduating from Menlo Magna Cum Laude, Doherty worked for Cosbie’s Great Achiever’s Organization, an organization targeting inner city youths from East Palo Alto providing educational opportunities at another distinguished WCAL school, St. Francis of Mountain View. |
